Open to grades 11 & 12
Prerequisite: English grades of at least a B average
Counts as both writing and literature requirement
The study of rhetoric - the art of communicating effectively for a purpose is the focus of AP English Language and Composition, a college-level course. Reading nonfiction prose from a variety of historical periods, academic disciplines, and day-to-day contexts, students analyze the writing choices and moves of professional writers and work towards achieving a persuasive voice that will serve them in college-level writing assignments. Since students who take the national exam may qualify for advanced placement credit in college English, students should expect the coursework to require considerable amounts of time, effort, and work. Due to the nature of the class, books may contain mature themes, topics and language. Possible books taught may include Population 485, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Evicted, A Small Place, etc. Summer reading and writing assignments are required.
